I'm sooooo glad!! I've been using the battery disposal by security for years but I have been collecting those light tubes in my bedroom closet for ages - I think I have about 10 of them!

Too bad they won't take microwaves. I had an ancient beast from the 80's that finally broke last year, and it's been sitting in a corner of my dining room ever since :P At least it's serving a purpose: It is currently a "shelf" for my towers of canned organic cat food, and where kitty sits when he wants to tell me it's feeding time =^^=

When I ws covering Earth Hour in Toronto, one of the restaurants was using dry erase boards instead of paper in order to reduce their overall paper consumption. I was thinking that this might be a good idea for this initiative.

Exactly! It's all about making others take action; about making other people realize that even their actions can make a difference. A lot of people seem to have the "I don't bother because I can't make a difference on my own." but things like Earth Hour make them see that *everyone* with that attitude taking action DOES make a difference.

Anywho... David and I had our fondue, which was a huge blast. We turned off the TV and almost all the other appliances (I left my DVR on so we could record Earth Hour programming on CBC) We were most excited about watching the lights go off at Sheridan but were extremely disappointed when all they did was turn off the parking lot lights and the lights between buildings. I don't know if those are the lights that require the most energy or something, but I think given that there were cars in the lot, that was a pretty dangerous thing to do. I certainly wouldn't want to walk to my car in the dark. We took movies and pictures but since you can see all the lights on at the college, they're not that impressive.

We had a huge laugh when we watched the TV coverage later... typical media types saying, "...it's ok, you can leave your TV on and watch us, you only really have to turn the lights off." *shaking head*

We actually enjoyed having the TV off. Aside from repeatedly checking out the window for the status of Sheridan, our time passed quickly as we chatted and joked and had fun with our fondue by candle-light. We found that more than anything else, it was a great way to have some rare QUALITY TIME with each other. It was like having Earth Hour and TV Turn-Off Day all in one :)

I haven't gone through my pics yet but when I do, I'll post something!

Tending toward extremism as I sometimes do, rather than just hitting the lights I went down to the basement and turned off the main breaker so I was using zero power for the hour. That was after a phone call from someone who was telling me how they had turned off their lights and now were watching Earth Hour around the world on TV (approx 150 watts, the equivalent of 13 CF light bulbs)... yes, yes, I know Earth Hour is a media circus and that's okay because it's more about awareness than anything. Besides, if we can get people to make small changes, it is more likely they will make big changes!

I saw that Sheridan will be shutting off the lights at all 3 campuses during this hour. More info at: http://www1.sheridaninstitute.ca/promo/earthhour/index.cfm
