I saw [or someone told me that] the cleaners empty recycling containers and just add it in with the garbage. I brought it this up with Gord Ide in Facilities. He said that sometimes this may happen if cleaning staff see a bag has mixed items from the two recycling streams (e.g., bottles/cans/glass mixed in with papers/boxboard). Recycling can be  confusing to those of us who work here because our municipal programs (in Halton and Peel) allow us to chuck it all in one box. But Sheridan uses a contractor that hauls away in two material streams. Here in the Career Centre, I have been emptying our recycling bins myself when they get full, removing anything that shouldn’t be there, and then putting the bags out in the hall and hoping this is the best chance they will get to the recycling dumpsters.

Can paper cups (like Tims) go in the paper recycling blue bin? No. This is an example of contamination (the wrong thing going in recycling, potentially rendering the whole bag as garbage). Any paper food product (including Tims cups) that can be easily ripped can go in municipal green bins. But that means you need to take it home. How about starting a communal green bin in your office area? Even better,  how about using a mug… Tims/Second Cup/the Caf will give you a 10 cent discount.
